Online Forums and Your Internet Reputation

Forums and online discussion boards ranks high in search engine result pages, particularly forums with large numbers of active users all engaged in discussions of specific topics, brands, companies, and people – anything under the sun. A negative entry about a person, company or brand in one of these discussions that would elicit multiple reactions from members would eventually go viral and find its way on search engine results – creating considerable damage to someone’s online reputation.

A person’s first impulse may be to defend himself, his brand or company by participating in these discussions, often leading to inflammatory debates and heated remarks that would only make matters worse and creates more chances for these pages to find their way to search engine results. With your internet reputation at stake, it is vital that you make a carefully planned move to address the issue and don’t make foolish mistakes that would only add up to the already existing damage.

The best way to start is to layout a concrete plan of action to address the issue using effective reputation management activities. It would be best to consult or seek the help of experts in internet reputation management, for it would be difficult and oftentimes ineffectual to pursue these activities on your own. The key thing here is to take action at the earliest onset of attack to your online reputation, avoid making online moves that would only aggravate the situation, and constantly monitor updates to the forum as well as search engine results for your name, company, brand – including keywords that are relevant to you.
